Let some one that doesnโ€™t know much about cars pump gas? I knew this going in and it supposed to be about the drivers safety, but some of the guys running the pumps are not the brightest candles! I sat at one station for 5 minutes after the pump shut off. I couldnโ€™t do it on a weekly basis. I hope they get rid of the outdated ridiculous law befor my next visit. By then I should have a DP and plenty of diesel to skip the pumps in the state!

Rant over! :E

I actually like the NJ Law, especially in the middle of winter when the bitter cold wind if howling and the temps are below freezing.

Summer time is not too bad sitting in an air-condition car while some one pumps the gas.........

I pay by cash, so "pump-your-own" states, I have to walk to the teller, walk back and stand outside pumping my own gas.

I like the NJ law - so it takes maybe 1 minute longer, chill out relax and enjoy,
and it gives me time to chat with the attendant.

Yeah, chill out! Itโ€™s the law in NJ and if you donโ€™t like it go around NJ.

Will do.

And what I find odd is the fact Iโ€™m a 35 year auto tech (gas/diesel)! I can work on an engine and disassemble a fuel system, but pump gas in NJ no way! Iโ€™m sure the attendants have very good schooling on pumping gas!

Sounds like they enacted those laws before they put all the safety features on the pumps.

A few years ago the law in NJ was put to a public vote as to whether to keep attendants or go to self service. Most people expected self service to win........... but it did not. Women, elderly and handicapped drivers voted to keep the law.

When you roll in on a MC they just hand you the nozzle if you even wait for them to show up.

Until the recent fuel tax increase, NJ gas prices were considerably less than PA, DE and many other states on the East Coast even though attendants had to be paid to pump the fuel. Now about the same price but rarely more. The previous low price leader, SC must have also increased their gas tax as this Spring fuel in SC was about the same price as some other states.
Safe travels!

I'm surprised. I thought this would be a thread about trying to drive where the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and a billion other roads all come together in a spaghetti like arrangement of ramps and turns. One false move and you add 30 minutes plus 2 extra tolls to your ride.

Personally, I love NJ fueling. I pay cash so it's much more convenient. Don't have to wait in line inside or go in twice if I paid too much (often waiting in the **** line twice).

The fuel is less expensive than neighboring states and they come right to your window. What's not to love?

๐Ÿ™‚ Hi, I pumped my own gas for several decades; It's not rocket science. Like many of you, I never went to school to learn how to pump gas. I now live in Oregon and I feel that at least someone has a job because of the law. My only complaint is that they stop pumping when the pump clicks off. This is OK for my F-150 and BMW, but my Lincoln will take about another three gallons of gas after it clicks off. I want it FULL. Now I don't know all of the Oregon laws, but my understanding is that you can pump your own diesel, ( I don't have any diesels) you can fill your motorcycles, lawn mower cans, and your portable generator. You can also pump your own gas at the Indian Casinos. And you can pump your own gas in small towns and / or after six PM.

You can legally pump your own diesel in Oregon too. Many people don't know that though.
