I need some info on this route I'm thinking about taking in a few weeks. I'll be heading north out of Cheyenne, WY and heading to Custer, SD. The question I've got is about those tunnels and any other problems I might run into alone the way. Any info will be nice.

As others have indicated, there's no tunnels at all in getting from Point A (Cheyenne WY) to Point B (Custer SD). Did that trip last year, have done it several times in the past. Last year, took I-25 north to US 85, through Torrington and Lingle and on up through Lusk, to the junction with US 18 which goes east through Edgemont SD, then pick up SD 89 to US 285 and on to Custer SD. It's a good drive, but be aware of a lack of services from Lusk to Edgemont, including cell phone service. That's approximately 70 miles between them, consider topping off fuel in Lusk. Also, there's a goodly steady climb from the US 85/US 18 junction on the way to Edgemont.

I have taken that route. No tunnels. Great drive and Custer State Park is excellent. If you need a place to stay in Spearfish, Lana and Bryce do a great job with their campground. It is Chris' Campground.

Thanks Padredw: I think I was reading another post about the tunnels on Hwy 16A. But I'm probably wrong again.

A few years ago we followed this route: I-25 N. to US 20 to US 18 to SD 89.

No tunnels. The tunnels are after your RV is safely parked near Custer. You would not want to miss the drives on Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway, but you would far less want to try either with an RV of any type.

BTW, we stayed at Custer's Gulch RV Park and very much enjoyed it.
