Opinion of Texas Route

We will be traveling from Kerrville, TX to Port Bolivar, TX. I would like to hear opinions on this route that map quest has laid out. Leave Kerrville on Interstate l0, then bypass San Antonio either by Texas loop l604 or Texas Hwy 46, then rejoin Interstate l0. Stay on Interstate l0 until exit 756 Sam Houston Tollway.(now I am not thrilled about a toll road, however if it is the best route, then I will gladly pay the tolls) From Sam Houston to Interstate 45. Now the route listed above is what I am most interested in hearing opinions on. There are several smaller roads after this that will take me to the Ferry, but I am not worried about them as I am what I listed above. If anyone thinks there is a better route, I would certainly love to hear about it.
Thanks in advance

  • Being a native of the area I would bypass San Antonio on Hwy 46 although most mapping programs these days would pick 1604. 1604 would be preferable on weekdays between 9:00a and 3:00p due to schools and rush hour traffic on 46.

I do question, taking the rv on the Bolivar Ferry.
I decided not to on last years trip to High Island.
I got the thinking about the ramps getting on and off the ferry
and the tides. I decided not to.
Did take the ferry with the pickup only.
Saw a motorhome and toad get on the ferry, there was a loud scraping noise.
    Something to think about.

I had no problem with the tail dragging. It may be different with a TT or 5th wheel.
Then too, if it was a concern, one could check the tide charts and get the ferry at a higher tide.

  • Ah, after looking at the map I believe Houston Remodeler was saying the same thing.
  • You could also go through Alvin. This adds about 9 miles and 10 minutes but it keeps you out of most of the Houston traffic and off the toll road.
  • If you want easier back roads, take 36 south from eye ten at Sealy then make your way over to 6
