Optimal US Road Trip

Interesting article on a Optimal US Road Trip. Would be fun to do it IMHO. The one that focuses on cities is interesting too. CLICKY
  • This was one result in a route optimization exercise to visit every state in the lower 48, finding a "National" something to stop at.

How optimal is a 50 destination road trip depends on how well the 50 destinations chosen fit your interests. A different list would result in a different route.

There are 59 National Parks in the U.S., not all of them in the lower 48, some not accessible by car, and some offshore. The total NPS system is current 407 units, including National Monuments, National Recreation Areas, and National Historic Sites. Connecting those optimally would be another interesting exercise.

Another popular optimization exercise is to connect the state capitals. This one goes through a few of them.
  • Interesting, but I too would choose a different route. I have always thought a drive down the entire length of Route 66 with plenty of stops would be fun. Of course, camping at every national park would be a dream. But that will have to wait for retirement in about 15 years.

I guess "optimal" is in the eye of the traveler. It just all depends on what you like to see and do and how long you like to spend in each place. I can't think that 3 months would even begin to be enough time to make this trip to touch base at the attractions!

Oh well, glad I'm retired now and my next trip will not be constrained by time!

    Agree!!
I would never go out of my way to see Detroit or any huge city. My optimal trip would avoid all cities over 1 million

Oh My! Albeit all of us have been there done that at one time or another in the course of being a Full Timer but I sure don't see 3 months even long enough to do it in an RV. :B

..."If you didn’t sleep, stop or hit traffic, Olson calculates that this would take roughly 9.33 days of driving. In reality, you probably need a good two to three months to do justice to this epic American road trip...."
