Good day all,

Wife and I are starting our planning for a trip to Oregon. Never been there so looking for some advice. 23ft class C, just the 2 of us. We were thinking about the following route:

Colorado Springs - Portland, Oregon via Boise, Idaho
Portland - Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach - south on Hwy 101 (towards Sacramento)
Sacramento - Colorado Springs

Mainly looking for camping areas along 101 from Cannon Beach south. Prefer small campgrounds, state parks, quite areas, KOAs. Don't necessary need/want RV resorts, I'm to cheap for that, lol.

Also looking for any must sees along 101. I assume that our rig will be fine along Hwy 101 in that area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Hello,
I would for sure try and pass thru Bend and try the Cascade lakes highway and go toward Government Camp and stay at campground on Timothy lake and Lake Trillium. Oregon coast campgrounds State Park campgrounds are the best. Need Reservations. FortStevens State Park, Beverly Beach State Park, Honeyman state parks are great. Some of the sites of interest would be Seal lion caves, Tillimook Cheese factory, Newport Bayfront, Cannon Beach.
My new DRW and camper on the truck the first time.

If you are passing through Waldport about lunch time you can get some great burgers at Chubby's! East side of 101, about 100 yards south of the stop light.

Oregon has many state parks on the coast, while some require a short walk 1/4 to 1/2 mile walk to the beach two on the north Central are very close to the water.

Beverly Beach, located just north of Newport, while on the east Side of 101, has easy safe access to the beach under a high highway overpass.
Beachside, about 3 miles south of Waldport, is squeezed between 101 and the Ocean. It is a small park and may be reserved full already for those dates, but you can look.

Be sure to catch the Cape Argo Highway SW of North Bend/Coos Bay. We spent 7 weeks on the Oregon coast last summer and from Charleston to Cape Argo State Park was probably the prettiest stretch of road. A good spot to stay there at a reasonable price is the Prot of Coos Bay in Charleston. No great shakes scenery wise, but a busy harbor with good restaurants in walking distance. Do not miss the Cinnamon rolls at Crabby Cakes Bakery!

Check out Our Blog from last summer for other sights and eateries along the coast

I didn't see the dates you expect to be in Oregon. There are numerous campgrounds and you may not need reservations except during the busiest times.

Start making all your reservaions for your whole trip NOW. Especially in the whole state of Oregon.

Spent a lot of time in Oregon and if I were you I'd come in on I84 as you suggested but at Baker City Oregon I'd turn off and take Hwy 26 to John Day and visit the fossil beds, Kam Wah Chung Museum and that area. Its awesome. Then I'd continue on Hw 26 and check out Mount Hood before getting into Portland. Hwy 26 will take you right to Cannon Beach. Going south make sure you stop at Tillamook Creamery and try a double decker ice cream cone in a chocolate dipped waffle cone with sprinkle. (LOL)and any of the State Parks along the coast would be a fine place to camp. When you get to Calif. try to get reservations at Jedediah Smith State Park and spend some time enjoying the redwoods. But then I'd take 199 northeast to I 5 and then cross over to Hw 97 and visit Crater Lake. and then head east picking up 395 to Reno and home

This....and stop at Bowpicker for fish and chips lunch in Astoria....right across the road from The Maritime Museum.
Make reservations NOW for any of the Oregon Coast State Parks.
Visit the redwoods in far northern Calif. and then cut over to I=5 and on down to Sacramento.
Have a good trip.

101 southbound is the best direction to enjoy the spectacular OR coast. BUT the campgrounds fill up very quickly. Two choices are suggested - make reservations NOW - if you can get them??
OR plan to travel in AM and stop in early afternoon and enjoy the ambience.
