pets

We will be going to Rocky Point over Thanksgiving, what is required to take a pet to that area?
  • The only place that anyone has had a problem is Lukeville. In 25 plus years of crossing into Mexico we have never been asked to produce anything for our cats. Even going North neither the USA nor Canada has ever asked for a certificate. But we do get one every year. Pet food is another story!

  • We have been taking a dog and a cat with us for the past 6 years. Our vet always gives us a health certificate. A separate one for each pet. They cannot be on one but must be separate. The 10 day rule is correct but we have never done it. Always get it too early as we live in Missouri and take too long to get to the boarder. Actually, no one has ever asked about our pets. Our dog only gets a rabies vaccination every 3 years but our vet gives her a new tag just in case anyone questions that it is more than a year old.
  • No name calling. Here is the link to the page:

We have crossed to and from Canada and Mexico many many times, and nobody has ever asked for a health certificate. We have been asked for rabies papers, including the last time we crossed into Mexico from Lukeville.

Wrong the rules state you need a recent valid certificate of health on a Vets letterhead showing his address & license number. Chances of being asked for it are slim but those are the rules.
  • We always carry a current copy of Dukes shot record where ever we go. I know this does not cover the 10 day period you are talking about. I just feel it is a good thing to have at all times.

  • When reentering the US with dogs, all that is required is proof of current rabies vaccination. Nothing else, no health certificate.
    Cats require nothing at all.
  • To take pet across the border into Mexico you need a valid health certificate - any vet should be able to give you one. Rarely are you asked for this but you could be.

When you cross back across into the USA, you also need a valid health certificate again.

You could, in theory, use the same health certificate for both crossings depending on how long you are staying in Mexico. The health certificate must be issued within 10 days of border crossing.

Again - any vet in Mexico should be able to give you a valid certificate. I've never had a problem - either way - with the vet knowing what to do. The question they always ask is "when are you crossing the border" because if you get the health certificate too far in advance, it will expire.

  • Current rabies vaccination papers. You probability will not be asked for them but the one time they do will ruin you trip.
