Planning our 4th of July trip- thinking Gettysburg

If you are worried about driving hills, the east coast isn't the way to go. The "hills" in the northeast can be very deceiving. They can consist of a lot of long, steep grades. Are you afraid your vehicle is underpowered or is it a dislike of steep edges?

If you're planning to cut across on route 30 to G'burg, I remember it as being a little "interesting", even without towing. That was quite a few years ago, but can't imagine its changed. Can't advise on the other routes.

I would use 76(turnpike) to Rt 15.part of Rt30 has some very steep hills and curves (truckers are asked to avoid) and Rt30 is 2 lanes most speed is under 55

Grab a truckers atlas at a truck stop and also order one of those mountain grade directories from the internet Clicky. It helps in planning routes.

1) You want to time your trip to get to Gettysburg well after or well before July 1, 2 & 3 (or the closest weekend). Gettysburg is crowded all summer long but around the anniversary of the battle it is unbelievable.

2) If it must be over July 4 make your reservations ASAP. Many CG's are booked a year in advance.

3) If coming in from the west I would also avoid Rt. 30. "Interesting" is an understatement. Work your way over to Rt. 15 (maybe from I-80?) and head south on 15 to Gettysburg.

Thank you all so much for the input! Yeah I think we may decide to hold off on Gettysburg over the 4th. (You would think I would have remembered that was when the battle was fought being a history buff lol- just got caught up in the excitement of me and the hubby having almost 10 days off together) I want to be able to enjoy it and take in all that history without a bunch of crowds. Hmmmm now where to decide where to go....lol
