Hello,

I am looking for recommendations on where to stay on the way to and from Yellowstone. We are coming from the Portland Oregon area. We have two young kids and are pulling a 25ft travel trailer.

Thanks!

We just (not an hour ago) made reservations at Massacre Rock State Park (a historical place....going back to the wagon trains).....but BEWARE....Idaho state parks charge out of staters an extra $10. to camp in their parks. The advertised $29. (yes, with a star) ended up costing us $45.00!!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ oh, well, we are staying outside of West Yellowstone for only $8.00 a night.....:) ๐Ÿ™‚

Near Craters of the Moon (about 20 miles east of it) is the KOA in Arco. Probably more comfortable in summer, as it has hookups so you can run a/c. Stop by Craters for a bit, check out the visitor center, and then head on down the road to Arco. The Craters CG is unique & interesting, but no hookups and no showers. Just FYI.

BTW, Craters and Arco are on US 20, not on I-84/86. If you're sticking to the interstate and not traveling on a weekend, you might be able to find a site at Massacre Rocks State Park, about 10 miles west of American Falls, ID. Nice park, electric & water hookups. Your rig will fit in some, but not all, sites; we recommend the lower loop, as it will have less road noise. Some nice, family-friendly trails, not too long, and interesting history & view of the Snake River.

If you prefer to go not quite as far as Massacre Rocks, and are driving on I-84, a very nice private CG on the way is Village of Trees in Declo, just east of Burley. Not a lot for kids to do, but there's a path down to the river that campers can walk on, and there's a cafe onsite, open weekdays as well as weekends. If the kids will want to blow off steam, there's a KOA in Jerome, near Twin Falls, but we haven't been there, so can't comment on it.

Oregon Trails in Baker, Or. Check to make sure your dates are not during the Fair.
Next stop would be at Craters of the Moon. A little educational. It could be very hot though.
These two stops would break the days down.
Think about reservations in West Yellowstone. Could be too late to get sites reserved in the park.

With kids, I would suggest staying in West Yellowstone at the KOA. It has a great indoor pool and other things for the kids. They have some good breakfasts and dinners during the season to save doing in the rig.

We are going mid July and can spend two nights between here and there. We have reservations at Fishing bridge once we get there.

Thanks

Little more information is needed to a better response. How long are you planning on taking to get from Portland to Yellowstone?
Are you taking the interstates all the way?
When are you planning the trip?
