Thinking about putting an air-ride suspension on my 5er. Company is in Thunder Bay Ontario. Will there be any excise or export taxes when I cross back into US? Or will the company charge all taxes? Some have said just don't tell them about it when returning into US. The cost is going to be about $3500 Mn resident.

Border guard:
"Do you have anything to declare?

You:
"No. I did not buy a single solitary thing in Canada that I did not already eat/drink/smoke or otherwise fully consume before I got to this crossing, Mr. Border Guard. SIR!"

Why would the company doing the install charge you any taxes other than the provincial taxes? As for not telling anyone, you may not have a choice. I've been asked twice at the border if I've had any modifications or work done on my vehicle. This was coming back into Canada though.

Where is the system made?

My (weak) understanding of NAFTA is if the system is made in Canada there should be no duties.

I know that held true on a bunch do other stuff

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

They're never going to know about it unless you put a big sign on your front bumper telling them what you did. There might not even be any duty on it, but you could spend a lot of time figuring that out at the border.
