Redwood NP to Lassen NP

Looking for the most direct route from Redwood NP to Lassen NP. CA 299 appears to be it but it looks like it has many switchbacks. I have a 31ft. Class C and am a very experienced driver, not afraid of switchbacks, just looking for feedback on what to expect.
  • CA 299 is a good highway, just take your time and enjoy the area, particularly the stretch along the Trinity River and the area around Weaverville. Have a good trip!
  • Depends where you are starting from. From the Crescent City end it is faster to go through Oregon on 199. From Eureka 299 is faster.
299 has curves and grades, but no worse than many other mountain roads.
  • I enjoyed towing my 36 ft trailer over CA-36 from Red Bluff to Fortuna. But at the time it was impossible to get north of Groveland on 101, so 20 was out, 299 had four slide closings with alternating one way traffic average time from I-5 to 101 was 13 hours. and 199 was almost 200 miles extra driving. It is as either give up going to Refwoods or 36.

However I would never recommend traveling that road. There was barely any traffic and I found plenty of places to pull over let others past. Average speed on 36 was about 19.5 mph.
  • Stay away from 36.......depending where you are..........go 299
  • There are only a so many roads across the coast mountains. 20 to the south is shortest and easiest. 199 to the north (intoOregon) has a windy section along the river, but otherwise is easy. It passes under its summit in a tunnel. This 299 is next on the list, with 36 last.
  • we took 299 from Redwoods to Lassen in 2011 with our current 40 foot motorhome with a minivan in tow. I thought the grandsons were going to be car sick from all the turns but we made it.
  • We went across 299 it is narrow and winding, and by now is probably 100% potholes considering CA road maintenance. But we had no trouble. We went Lassen to Redwoods.
