We are planning a trip for later this year to mt rushmore, we would be taking I90 east and would like to stop on the first day at niagra falls and then be on our way the next morning. Looking for tips and insights on how to best go about this. Looking for the closest campground to the falls for an overnight stay and if wwe can drive to the US side of the falls in the RV

I agree I have driven from Ct to the Falls a few times. By the time you get there you will probably looking for a rest. You will have to overnight to see anything, even then it will not be much.

I think you might be pushing it a bit to drive from R.I. to Niagara Falls, get to a campground, and then still plan on seeing the Falls that same day. You might want to consider a 1 day layover at say 4 Mile State Park, it's about the closest to the Falls.

4 mile state park or golden hill state park.
If you stop and see the falls first, drive down 90 west to Westfield exit. Stay at Lake Erie State park!

Do you need a CG or could you stay in the service area just before the Buffalo end of the thruway?
I have seen MH and TT in the US side parking lot. In fact Google earth shows the lot with 3-4 in it.
Two CG on Grand Island near the falls one is a KOA other is

Slightly confused as to which direction you plan to approach the Falls from. If you travel through Ontario I wouldn't worry about crossing to the US side, the view from the Canadian side of the Falls is vastly superior to that from the US side (sorry folks, but it's true!)
BTW it's spelled N I A G A R A.
