Roll Call Alaska 2013

Just thought I'd start a thread regarding who will be starting up to Alaska in 2013. It would be nice if we could share information so everyone has a memorable and safe trip.
We will be leaving around the end of May out of Las Vegas. We will be traveling with our 40' MH and towing our Equinox car. We are heading up with my husband's cousin and her husband and they have an airstream.
We have gone before but in 2005 so we are really looking forward again to the adventure. It is surely a trip of a lifetime and to do it more than once is a blessing. We are only on this earth for a short while.
Travel safe!

Time to draw on the knowledge base here again. We have a screened enclosure we can put up, big enough to go around a picnic table. We use it so we can keep the bugs out when we eat. With those saying they put everything away at night, would that include this enclosure when staying at places like Denali Campgrounds (including Teklanika) or state/provincial campgrounds? We would not use it while boondocking, but we were wondering about in a campground.

Jane, we will not be going until 2014, but I did start a message for 2014, but basically this message is for places to go, adventures and feedback for your favorite stops while on your 2013 trip. So while your group heads north don't don't forget to check in and let us lower 48'ers know your adventures. That way in 2014 we will have some idea of stops and things we should not miss. Thanks to all of you lucky dogs leaving for Alaska and keep us posted with the "adventure of a lifetime"
thanks

Yes we've gotten a lot of good information from this thread and thank Janet for starting/maintaining it. Plus everyone else for contributing.

We will be about a week behind Janet. We're not planning a lot of sightseeing until Dawson Creek but maybe Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (probably can't post this one on our website due to young GC's) and Edmonton.

I, for one, am glad you did. This will be our first trip to Alaska and this thread has been great. The packing lists, places to see, the things to do, tips, warnings, all have made our planning better and more enjoyable. And there is the anticipation of seeing fellow Roll Call Alaska 2013 travelers along the way. Words of experience are always good for the rookies.

Thank you for your efforts.

Thank you!! I am glad I started it also. Even though I have been once before, I still learned alot from all the ones that have been many times and of course Sue (who lives up there). Even if you have been many times before you might get an idea of a new place to stop and experience or pack something you might have forgotten.
I hope to meet alot of you great people on the road.
Thanks to all of you for making this a wonderful informational thread which is sure to help all of us have a memorable trip.

20 days and counting for us (19 if we don't count today! (not getting too anxious, lol)

Thank you, drove to Alaska in 2005 and 2010 including all the way to Prudhoe Bay. Don't have an itinery in mind after we get off AMH in Haines but will probably stay inland this year depending on the fire situation.

This sounds like a double edge sword - you might get the gun into Canada the first time but not the second time from Alaska. Or you might be OK for both entries.

As well, it is valid for only 60 days. So if you will re-enter then exit Canada more than 60 days after you first entered Canada, you must either get it renewed before it expires or apply for a new one when you cross into Canada.

The RCMP website advises:
Once the declaration has been confirmed by the CBSA customs officer, it acts as a licence for the owner and it is valid for 60 days. The declaration can be renewed for free, providing it is renewed before it expires, by contacting the Chief Firearms Officer (call 1-800-731-4000) of the relevant province or territory.

I don't know which CFO you should phone if you first entered in B.C. and then plan to re-enter Canada at a Yukon crossing. Do you phone Yukon's CFO or B.C.'s?

I do know the Beaver Creek customs agents are well-known for their diligence. So do be sure your paperwork is in order.

Back to stowing discussions: When we were going to take the bus, 252 cans of cat food was no problem, now with the camper I'm getting creative on storage! I've given up the idea of taking all the food my kitties need and now plan on restocking at a Sam's Club in AK. I can put three boxes of 36 cans each under my dinette, with the ready service box in the pantry I think that will get us to AK

Cat food is important! Remember:

Just finished making reservations on the BC ferries and the AMH for this summer. Will go from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, spend a couple of days and then to Juneau and Haines and then up into the Yukon and maybe further into Alaska. For sure Dawson City, the Yukon is one of our favorite places and may go over TOW or maybe just wander around and head back South.

We're planning to enter SE Alaska at Haines and Hyder and return to Canada. I assume that there are border crossings at these locations? Just curious.
