We are in Alaska now and are planning on leaving in the next couple days heading down the Alaska highway and then the Cassiar highway. We too are from NC and have been in Alaska since early June. We too look for ways to save and camping is a good way to save. It is easy to find places to stay for free. We try and find a campground every 6 or 7 nights to dump and get water. Our goal is to average less that $20 dollars a night. Near the end of our trip we have become lazy and stayed in some campgrounds paying $40 a night (full hook-ups with cable TV). However, for the trip we are under $20 a night. By far, our biggest expense is gas... We have tried to keep a blog of our trip and have listed places we have stayed. You can also PM us and we will share our adventures with you...
