Not only is it warmer up on the hillsides around Fairbanks, but it also puts a person up above the obnoxious ice fog they have there often, in the winter time. Plus a person can get away from the worst of the ice fog by living out in North Pole as does Silver eagle. The super cold is still there but not the ice fog to the extent that encases Fairbanks from all the people, cars, heating, wood stoves, etc of town.
Joe's comment reminds me of a billboard I saw in College in 1972, the first time I was in Fairbanks. It was advertising "Homes Above the Ice Fog" for sale. Being from Colorado, I had to ask someone what ice fog was. After his explanation, I started seeing all the electrical outlets on posts in parking lots and the number of cars with small plastic sheets stuck to the inside of their car's side windows and plugs hanging out of their grills. That's when it really dawned on me that Alaska wasn't just Colorado with a longer winter!
It's hard to believe those homes the billboard was advertising are now 40+ years old.
