Roll Call Alaska 2014

Anyone traveling to Alaska in 2014? We ,my wife and I, are planning a trip and was wondering if anyone is planning on going in 2014 also.
Would go this year, except we have two weddings to go to in MI, one in late June the other in early August.
So next year we are planning to leave home in NC in mid July, we plan a 2 month trip. We were there in 2004, only that time we were with paid RV tour. Loved it, and would take another paid tour in a 'heart beat', but the cost is now too much.
The reason for the mid July date is looking at the 2013 Alaska postings the wx, road conditions and insects are at their worst. Later in the season all three are better. Plus I want to travel back on the Cassiar Hwy in Sept is supposed to be the best time of the year on the Cassiar, plus less travelers.
Finally, money is an issue with us. So we will 'boon dock', stay at
free or low cost CG's, rest areas, etc. when ever possible.

Hope you all have a great trip and hope to see you some where along the way.

When most of us plan a trip North, Alaska is generally our goal. But, take Sue's advice and add to your planning, B.C., Yukon and maybe the Northwest Territories. They are all absolutely beautiful and filled with wonders and extremely friendly people. I have actually seen more wildlife there than Alaska. I do believe in making this trip you will find that the old adage about the journey being more important than the destination certainly will fit here.

Boondocking areas abound and I haven't been since 2010, but the forty dollar figure sounds a little high if you look hard enough.

Take your time and enjoy your trip , but don't bet on it being your last.

So a 2 month plus will be it for us.

Hope to see you then.

Only 9 months to go.

Maybe we'll see you.

Yes it is. The anticipation is more exciting than the trip. Spent hours upon hours planning the first trip north. Learned some lessons. Applied them to the second trip. Learned some more.

If we go next year it will be at a slower pace. Alaska is alot like going to an island only you are surrounded by wilderness instead of water. The trick is to slow down, stop, & enjoy the views instead of the fast stop for a photo op & go.

We're panning on 3 months maybe 4 depending on whether we leave in June or July.

We plan on boondocking a few days, the campgrounds for a few and back and forth. It's not the money mind you I just would love to take in the wildlife and sights. Go slow is what I'm seeing everyone recommending.
If you leave from Maryland we might just see you on the road.

Just an a few FYI's for everyone that has been following the 2013 thread.

The Mike and Terry Church's Camping Alaska is being updated and will be available Nov 1, 2013.
I placed my order at Barnes & Noble for $21.95

AAA has the best printed maps for the North West.
Alaska & Nothwestern Canada and Northwestern States/Provinces.

The combination of the two give me/DW a better planing tool for the order in which we want to see things.

It's going to be a long winter.

As the roads north are very limited in number, you will probably run across the same folks often in your travels. Getting lost is NEARLY impossible. Just go and worry not....except for the credit card bill.

We are planning to go to Alaska 2014 leaving from Florida around May 1 and will head back end of August.
We are not really much for a caravan but would love to meet people at various stops, always nice to make new friends.

We are planning a return trip in 2014. We did a 5 week trip in 2009 which wasn't nearly enough time. I retired last year so have more time to allocate to this trip.

My brother will retire after the first of the coming year and is really looking forward to going to Alaska. He is actually the instigator of this trip but I didn't need any convincing as I have wanted to return.

We have not established any definite timetable yet and are somewhat flexible but are leaning on leaving North Alabama mid to late May.

Would be nice to hook up with some of you for occasional travel or camping together.
