Roll Call Alaska 2014

Anyone traveling to Alaska in 2014? We ,my wife and I, are planning a trip and was wondering if anyone is planning on going in 2014 also.
Would go this year, except we have two weddings to go to in MI, one in late June the other in early August.
So next year we are planning to leave home in NC in mid July, we plan a 2 month trip. We were there in 2004, only that time we were with paid RV tour. Loved it, and would take another paid tour in a 'heart beat', but the cost is now too much.
The reason for the mid July date is looking at the 2013 Alaska postings the wx, road conditions and insects are at their worst. Later in the season all three are better. Plus I want to travel back on the Cassiar Hwy in Sept is supposed to be the best time of the year on the Cassiar, plus less travelers.
Finally, money is an issue with us. So we will 'boon dock', stay at
free or low cost CG's, rest areas, etc. when ever possible.

Hope you all have a great trip and hope to see you some where along the way.

Thanks to all for explaining things. One thing I noticed is the cover photo is different, and it states over 400 campsites covered. That makes me think this clown is pushing an older copy.

Scumbags are everywhere.

My copy says '6th Edition" on the cover of the 2014 version I received from Amazon about two weeks ago.

Unfortunately this is quite common on Amazon. The high price listing is from an outside vendor. For several reasons these outside vendors put a high price on their listings. It's like selling on EBAY - a Seller could put a Church's book out there and put a thousand dollars on it. It won't sell but they can do it. One possible spamming reason they *may* be doing this is the listing will appear on the internet and the indexing spiders pick it up and record/index a backlink to the vendors site which may get them higher in the search rankings. More links to your site the higher your search engine results. Now I'm not saying that's why they do it but just one possible reason. Just ignore that listing. By putting a high price, they won't worry about someone actually buying a book they never intended on selling in the first place. Evil spammers.

I just got the latest Church's book and it's the 6th edition.

We are figuring the 12th as well. The night before at the dry CG about 30 miles north of Chicken. Pretty place.

we plan on staying 3 days in Dawson city, June 9 -11, then the TOW to Chicken, AK.

Hope to meet if all goes well.
I say that cause my wife is supposed to have eye surgery (did i spell that correct??) so we are not really sure when we might leave home. She has a doctor appointment on April 4th then we have to wait for a date, then we have to wait until the doctor says we can depart. But if all goes well we will be there.

I used the link from JaneTrupp posted 1/21/14. I checked it again, and it shows 7 new at $312 and some used starting at $90.

Something is weird here.

The $16.45 price is the range I would expect.

Sounds like you are all getting ready and excited for your big adventure. Be safe, travel slow, take tons of pictures and have a wonderful time. We did in 2013 so read all the past posts and get tons of info.

If you have the time don't miss the Icefields Parkway

Icefields Parkway

Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper and too beautiful for words...

Janet,
We are going to do the Icefields Parkway. Trying to decide how many days we need to plan for the Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper area. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Opinions from you Alaskan Veterans, does this January patch of unusual weather mean anything?

1) Nothing at all, as come next week the normal weather pattern could kick back in?

2) An early start of the season?

3) If the trend continues, another very wet runoff year that could cause more flooding then usual?

4) Or come September we'll know, as Alaska does as Alaska does?

Just doing some 'What if?' thinking...

Yes to all of the above.

Records highs have been set all around. Good thing in a way, as we had record snowfall this year too so having much of it melt away early was a good thing.

Yukon River at Dawson hasn't frozen well-enough for the highway crew to put in the ice bridge. There is open water that needs to be driven around for those venturing out in their small vehicles. West Dawsonites can't get furnace oil/propane delivered because trucks can't cross the river.

An outdoor hockey tournament was cancelled in Dawson this past weekend because the ice turned to slush.

We were hiking on bare ground this past weekend:

And the local paddlers say the Takhini River usually doesn't open until April:

This mountain is usually white now, and the gravel road you see is unmaintained in winter:

I got mine 2 weeks ago. I saw it for the big price too and thought wow! I did get it for the 16.45. It is a great book. All the recommendations are right on. We are waiting for the Milepost.
