I have been planning this trip for 4+ years. It is now time to update my estimates and make my reservations.

Estimate Wash/BC border about 5 May 2016, north on route 97/1/2 to Tok, south to Valdez, make the hump to Anchorage, then to Homer and Seward, north to Denali, Fairbanks, back to TOK and off to Dawson, then south to Watson Lake, Smithers, then to CAN 16 east to Jasper,/Banff, on to Glacier in Montana, arriving early Sept so I can get thru the park then west to Kalispell. South thru the US to Houston area for the thanksgiving holiday and Florida for the Christmas holiday. Since I am sure it will be cold in Ohio I wont return home till April 2017.

Alaska here we come!!!!

G George

On edit, yup it's time to plan 2016. I edited your post to modify the title to be consistent with previous years; it will facilitate future searches for members.

Yep, I worked this accident when I lived in JNU. Real mess. Worked for JNU PD from 1986 till 2006 when I retired.

That would be Egan Drive at 10th St. you refered to above.

I was within a 4 minute walk from the city docks in Juneau where I stayed for three days during my June 1994 vacation....

Just as I was driving to the highway intersection and the Douglas Bridge on my way to the ferry terminal, three fire trucks and an ambulance were on code 3 (lights and siren) in a hurry responding to a call....

When I arrived in Haines, watching the NBA finals and the statewide news on TV had reported a fatality accident on the gangway that collapsed in Juneau the same day, which had just happened while I was departing from the area in Juneau - my heart went out to all that got hurt and killed.

Sometimes you just do not know what's going to happen in the north.

You guys get all that snow and rain out of the weather systems up there. We are in the process of packing for a departure soon. Don't need the weather Gods pissing on us and you can keep all the skeeters to yourself.

We were in Prince Rupert on Friday, where it was blowing so hard I could hardly walk uphill! The cruise ship news was all over town with accompanying opinions about how it happened. When we arrived in Ketchikan yesterday, it was still the main topic of conversation and, of course, we saw the damaged berth. Tides are very high right now (22')and the wind was gusting at 45 mph. I saw a video of the "event". Everything looked good until seconds before the wind hit the bow of the ship. Local opinion is that the ship should have stood off from the harbor until docking conditions were more favorable. No doubt some heads will roll! lizzie

What's a couple millon and a hole in the ship. Just keep it up on plain and keep the hole above the water line.

It can blow like stink in KTN and JNU. Lived in both places for 25 years total.

Kidoo. The website will not let you proceed through the registration process with an RV. Call Customer Service. There were large fivers and two tour buses on the ferry with us yesterday as well as a few 18 wheelers. You can take any size you want if you can afford it! I made reservations at campgrounds in the ports where we are staying,(although some folks stayed at WalMart in Ketchican last night). We did the Misty Fjords tour with Allen Marine today and I highly recommend, We had a beautiful, sunny day.

The Website will give you ferry schedules but you will have to actually call Customer Service to get availability and prices for you and your RV. They are very nice and will answer all your questions. You must buy a separate ticket for each time you get off the ferry, stay, and continue to another port. For example. We are two seniors towing a 24' TT with a truck. Our total length is 48.9 ft. We are leaving Prince Rupert in the morning, will arrive in Ketchikan tomorrow afternoon. We will leave Ketchikan on the 7th and will arrive in Juneau on the 8th. We have a cabin for this leg. We will leave Juneau on the 12th and will arrive in Haines later that day. The total cost for this trip was $1,982.00. The less you get off and on the cheaper it is. Good Luck! lizzie

Where do you stay at these port, is there any camping or you boondock?

Go to the AMHS Website HERE and put in the departure and arrival ports, the number of passengers, and the size of your RV. All of that info is required to get a price.

Just as an example, two seniors in a 35 ft. motorhome without a toad going from Prince Rupert, BC, to Haines, AK, would cost $1403. That includes an inside cabin for one night because you can't stay in your motorhome while on the ferry.

I checked on the website and entered the size of the MH, 35 feet, and it says maximum 30 ft?
