And remember the critters. Bears bite and those claws are not there for nail polish. moose stomp and bison stampede.
Had a friend from Anchorage who's husband was nearly stomped to death in 6' fenced back yard. His yappy dogs were out when the moose vaulted the fence and the dogs began harassing Bullwinkle. Turning them into fido burger. Husband ran out to save dogs. Moose stomped him unconscious then pissed on him. AST unit finally arrived and dispatched the moose. After a year husband was still not back to normal due to internal injuries and brain trama.
Give the wildlife their space. Don't be a tourist when looking for that perfect photo opportunity.
Back when I was living in AK my X-wife & I were traveling down to Valdez. Being new we stopped and walked back up road a bit to observe a moose across a creek that paralleled the road. Moose charged us and chased us back to our truck.
During our return trip in 2016 we came across a herd of bison stampeding along the Alaska Hwy. They had been spooked by tourists.
Years ago I was riding my GO FAST motorcycle from Whitehorse to Fairbanks. Bopping along at over 100 mph when a sow grizzly came out of the brush on my side of the road. She stopped at the edge of the highway and checked for traffic. I threw out the anchor and got the MC hauled down to a stop about 50' from her. She then called her 3 cubs who had waited in the brush that it was safe to cross the road. They all crossed and I sat there thinking. What a cool state I live in.
One Alaska highway trip I came across a Ford pickup that had collided with a moose. Not sure how they managed that since the sides of the road there were cut back at least 100'. Regardless both moose and pickup were DOA when I arrived. Front of the truck was up over the vehicle windshield topped off by a large Bullwinkle.
When you head north leave with good brakes. More then likely you'll be making at least one EMERGENCY STOP. In 2016 we made 3. 2 for chucklehead drivers in BC and once for a moose that jumped out of the brush right in fron of us. All I can say is that my Corvette driving school training more then paid for itself that trip. Truck and 5'er don't handle like my Vette but the physics are the same.
