When I asked ALDOT in writing, they said that propane must be shut off at the tanks when going through the tunnel but as others have said, I've never seen anybody get checked.

I like to take hwy 98 to Lucedale. Turn south on hwy 63 to I-10. Then east on I-10. You will avoid the stretch of hwy 98 in Alabama that is 2 lane and heavy traffic.
We have always gone straight down US-49 to I-10 through the Mobile tunnel all the way to Holt. I assume you are going to Blackwater River SP. That is a great park and this should be a good time of year to float down the river.

We've always gone right down US 98 to the intersection with I-65, then take I-65 south to I-10. No problem, except for a few miles as US 98 becomes urban before reaching I-65--and even then we've always moved right along.
The tunnel has never been a problem. We drive right through at normal speed. Propane tanks should be shut off, though we have never been checked. It is our responsibility to know the rules and follow them.
We have been this route many times over the past 15 years or more.
