Route from Amarillo to Ardmore, OK

In a couple of weeks, we will be going to Ardmore, OK from Amarillo and thinking about taking US 183 just east of Vernon, TX to US 70 and on into the Ardmore area (Lake Murry State Park). Looking at mapquest it looks like US 70 may have lots of red lights and slow downs. We've never traveled this area and would like your opinions. If this is not a good route, what do you suggest?

Not much traffic or towns on that route. I-40 to OKC, then south on I-35 would add about 40 miles to trip, but it is interstate all the way. You could also stay on US-287 to Wichita Falls, then Texas 79 NE to US-70 and 70 to Ardmore. About the same distance as taking i83, except you would miss the two casinos on 183 near Grandfield, OK.

I have not driven that route either. But if you look at google maps and zoom in you will see there are really no towns of any significance on that route. And if you do a google street view on what small communities there are you will have a hard time finding a traffic light. Just a long lonely rural road for the most part it appears.

|I would take US 287 to TX 256 to US62 to I44 to OK 7 to I35 to Ardmore. Sounds more complicated than it is and have traveled that route often. click for map
