Route From MD to Middlebury, VT and BoothBay, Me

Our current plan is to go up I-83 to I-81 to I-88 then I-89. State route 149 to Route 7 into Middlebury. On our way to Boothbay we have Route 7 to Route 4 east to I-89 south then 101 over to 95 north then 295 and Route 1 to 27 into Boothbay. Any of the highways to be avoided in a 40ft MH towing a vehicle? Thanks for any input.

    BillMFI,
Actually we are in Middlebury for the month of July and Shore Hills for August. We have a reservation in one of the spots up front near the pond. Maybe we will see you if you are still there.

We are now parked at our cabin for the summer but would be happy to visit while you are here. We have known the owners of Shore Hill since 1999 and its a very nice park. Have you been to Boothbay before? Only one stoplight and one grocery store. Lots of good places for sea food. Quiet and peaceful here and we love it.
  • Hi Squonk61,
We are at Rivers Bend north of town off of Route 7. Thanks for the heads up. My plan is to go through Middlebury on Route 7. From what I saw on Google Earth there is a left then a right but it looks fine for a big rig, at least from space. I did see a round about on Route 30 which I will avoid.
  • Middlebury has very tight roads and round abouts. Where are you staying there?

  • Lots of ways to go. Vermont has very nice state parks. I91 to I93 is more direct to NH and can be reached via I84. The Kankamagus Hwy takes you right to 302 near Conway. Lots to see in the Mt Washington area. I summer in Boothbay and stay at Shore Hills until we get our cabin ready. Been here two weeks now and its been rainy but should be drying soon. Hope you have a reservation at Shore Hills. It is filling up fast.
  • If you take 302 be sure to stop for lunch at the P&H Truck Stop In Wells River, VT. Best pie selection around.
  • Yes...Shore Hills is pretty nice. We have stayed there several times. Really nice big sites in the open area (little shade there). The sites in the wooded area are somewhat smaller. And many pine trees, which are messy and sticky. But if you re in a 40' MH, you'll be in the open area.

No need to worry about lunch parking. Many spots along 302 that you find nearby parking, without a need to back up your toad. Our park in a rest/picnic area along the roadside, and make your own lunch in your kitchen. Eat at a picnic table next to a nice flowing river. Bring some bug spray.
  • Thank both of you for the input. Yes we will be staying at Shore Hills. It sounds nice from the reviews. We hope to be able to kayak some while there.
According to S&T route 302 is only a little longer than our stated southern route. I will certainly take a look at it. I am a little concerned about a lunch stop with the big rig but will see what is available.
  • The only thing is your route from Middllebury to Boothbay, might be a little boring. And you are missing all that NH has to offer. And much of southern Maine too.

Take a look at Rt 302. A most scenic route. Although two lane secondary road. But no problem for a 40 foot DP and toad. Will take more time. But if you have the time, you'll enjoy the ride much more. Just give it a look.
  • You are good to go on any of these roads. You must be staying at Shore Hils in Boothbay? Anyway, have a great trip.
