Route help. Florida to Gatlinburg

Looking for route intel/suggestions from Central Florida (Ocala) to Jellystone RV Park near Gatlinburg. Driving a 30' class C, 2002 Ford V10. Google Maps has three options:

1. I75N to Atlanta, then 285 to 23 /74 to I40 across the mountains.

2. 301N to I95 to I26 to 74 to I40 across the mountains

3. I75N through Atlanta, Chattanooga, then I40 through Knoxville

Leaning towards#2 and not having to go through Atlanta.

Planning on leaving 4PM Wednesday afternoon, driving 3/4 of the way and boondocking, leaving a 3-4 hour trip Thursday morning.

If I take either route through Atlanta, traffic may not be bad late evening (10-11PM)

How is I40 through the mountains?

Any help, suggestions will be appreciated, Thanks

  • Took option 2 on return trip home today. Left at 4 AM, i40 and i26 was a breeze, no problems at all. Will definitely take this route next time up and will hit in the daylight hours to enjoy the scenery.
  • Thanks for the replies. We took option 3, boondocked at a WM in Cartersville, Ga. WM was only 2 miles of i75, lots of truckers there, good place to overnight. That left a nice short ride to Jellystone RV park next morning. Great campground and great time so far. Not sure which route i will take on the return trip yet.

    Thanks
  • The Jellystone is just out of Newport, about 8 miles (guessing) on Rt 321. Rt 321 is at exit 440.
  • Thanks! Not wanting to take 441 through the park. Picking up a rental car in Newport,TN so I 40 is more convenient option for us.
  • I would suggest that you take your option # 2. Highway 441 thru Smoky Mountain Park is a windy road and slow going in parts. If your not used to mountain roads your best bet is option #2.
  • I just got back from the south side of the park to just a few miles north of where you are. I took I-75 north to I-675->I-285->I-85 then I-985 to US 441 which goes thru the park to Gatlinburg. 441 is mostly 65 mph and 4 lane. I stopped south of the park. On the way back I left at 9 AM, stopped for breakfast, and then drove the rest of the way home and was there at 4:30. So a bit over 6 hours driving time subtracting one fuel stop and the meal stop. You would need an hour to 90 minutes to drive thru the park to Gatlinburg. I wasn't towing tho and could do 75 mph on the Interstates.

The fall colors are not near peak yet in the park, along the south end of the blue ridge the colors are nearer but not at the peak. It gets a bit cool in the evenings up there right now. It was coat gloves and hat weather at Clingman's dome at sunset when I was up there.
  • 4. I75N to ATL then 85/285 to US23/74, then US441 to Gatlinburg.
