Routes to Yellowstone
I turned 64 today and I'm the only one I know my age who's still never been to Yellowstone. It's on my Bucket List. Would like these questions answered:
1. I am an experienced mountain and snow driver but driving in snow with my TT is something I do not want to experience. Is next month (May) a good time to head to Yellowstone or should I wait until the thaw and all the crowds arrive?
2. I assume we would camp outside the NP and do day trips inside. Would plan on 4-5 days for those day trips into the park. Recommendations on where to camp. We want hookups. One gentleman recommended the W. Yellowstone KOA. I want input here.
3. If we travel I-90 need best route to our camping area (#2 above): (1) US-287 from Cardwell, MT or (2) US-191 from Bozeman or (3) US-89 from Livingston?
4. IF instead we decide to combine Yellowstone with a trip to Hells Canyon and head down through Boise and continue on I-84 how is US-20 for my rig heading up to W. Yellowstone from Idaho Falls?
5. OR what about US-12 over Lolo Pass if I decide on that route out of Lewsiston and head straight to Missoula? Would Lolo Pass be comparable to towing over White Pass on US-12 next to Mt. Rainier for a comparison?
