Routing from Gillette WY to Redmond OR help!

Would like to get some conformation regarding the proposed route. Out of Gillette WY on I-90 over to Buffalo, WY. From Buffalo taking 16 to Thermopolis. Thermopolis to Riverton. From Riverton take 26/287 to Moran, Wyoming. From Moran take the 191 (also known as the 26/89) to Jackson. From Jackson on South to Hoback then to Alpine. From Alpine take the 26 to Idaho Falls, ID. Then I-15 South to I-86 to I-84 to Boise, ID. From Boise, ID on West to Ontario, OR. From Ontario take the 20 to Burns, OR and then on to Bend, OR. North out of Bend on the 97 to Redmond.
I suggest this route as we have friends in the southern part of Tetons National Park and it looks to me if I stayed on I-90, 90 runs North in to Montana then West. From there I could jump on I-15 head South to Idaho Falls then I-86 to I-84 on to Ontario OR then jump on the 20 to Burns-Bend then Redmond.
I appreciate your suggestions in advance.
  • My wife is from Medford, OR, so we've been back and forth (from Gillette) many times and in about as many ways. There are no reasonable routes from Gillette to Oregon, as the mountains are in the way! ;) We usually go south and take I-80 from Rawlins, but as Redmond is further north that wouldn't be good.

There have been a few times we've gone through Yellowstone/Jackson, and those times we've taken Hwy 20 between Idaho Falls and Mountain Home. It's a good road with little traffic, and if you've never been that way, the Craters of the Moon area is kind of interesting. We also stayed on Hwy 20 between Ontario and Bend. Again, good road without much traffic, iirc. I've never been on Hwy 26 between Redmond and Ontario.

Have a nice trip. It's bound to be scenic no matter how you make it.
  • The only thing to really watch for, besides the eternal nuisance of road construction in various places, is going through the town of Jackson, Wyoming. There is a truck route, which I recommend over religiously following the route signs. Just a bit less traffic and way less pedestrian traffic, and it's only a detour of several blocks. The sign is fairly easy to find if you're southbound, which you will be. Good scenic route. 26 from Alpine to Idaho Falls is a gem. :)
  • Great suggestions fellows. We've got several days until we make our route conformation.
again, thank you for your suggestions........this is why RV.NET is a great resource.
  • I think it sounds like a good route. But,if I was traveling the same route, which we have. I'd take 26 from the 20/26 split, at Vale, west of Ontario to Redmond.
  • well, I can vouch for the Ontario to Redmond section --- it's the route we do all the time, except we go south to LaPine. :) Happy trails
