***** Rt. 138 Oregon ****

Traveling in June from Crater lake over to Roseburg, on Rt. 138. Has anyone traveled that road? we traveled over to Eugene last year on Rt. 58. It seemed a little hairy both ways. Just wondering how 138 is. We have a 36ft. fifth wheel. Thanks.

Thanks J herb, we aren't travelling until July...just planning our route!

So if you could choose, and you were only going to be there, maybe once, which would you choose? Time doesn't realy matter because we'll head out in the morning and no rush.

You can't take your RV to most of the waterfalls you need to use your tow vehicle. Some of the falls are a short hike from the parking areas.clickable

Their are several campgrounds along 138 starting from Diamond Lake to Roseburg, Google USFS and BLM CGs for more info.
Don't forget your mosquito repellent they are bad this time of the year.

Like Paulj said OR58 has a waterfall that rivals those on OR138 and both Hwys. have great things to see Google Hwy.58 in Oregon and see which one you may like, both are great to see.

    Salt Creek 286 ft.

    Tallest on 138 is
    Watson Falls 293 ft.

Toketee Falls on 138 is also spectacular, but requires more of a walk.

  • 58 is faster way to go and is a nice drive, several lakes to see.
138 is longer and slower but has the waterfalls, either drive is great. This is Holiday weekend so their will be a lot of traffic, have a good trip and stay safe.
  • Jumping in here:

We are staying at Collier Memorial State Park and the heading for the coast, but overnighting near Junction City, north of Eugene.

Mapquest sends us over 58, but would you suggest 138 for a more scenic drive? It looks like either way is the same distance? We are pulling a hybrid trailer.

    Thanks!
  • If you think 58 is hairy, then you should know that 138 is more curvy and doesn't have the passing lanes. Drive slower and take care and you'll be fine. BTW....there are an ENORMOUS # of waterfalls on 138.... :) :) Stop at them....some you have to hike into, some you can see from the parking lot!!!! Don't let it stop you from going over it.......In my opinion, as a life long Oregonian, it is BY FAR the prettiest drive in Oregon --- I believe it's prettier than the Columbia Gorge.......
  • First half of the "Rogue/Umpqua Scenic Byway", and it is a gorgeous drive. Link to description.

Drove over it in June a few years ago and the wildflowers were stunning. Good road all the way...
