Rt 15 near NY City

I was coming home from Bar Harbor Maine this past weekend in my class A. Coming down I95 my GPS said that there was heavy traffic congestion on 95 with an accident and rerouted me to RT15. Wrong move! Going down Rt 15 a lady tried to tell me about low underpasses. After going under one underpass that was 11'9",I realized what she was trying to tell me. My coach has a clearance of 11'6". Now I'm looking for a way to get off of RT15. The next sign I see said that the next underpass was 10'. Luckily their was an exit just before the underpass. I stopped and talked to a UPS driver and he said the only way out was downtown NY. After going through Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, Times Square, not thinking I could not go through the Lincoln Tunnel because of propane I had to use the George Washington Bridge. After 4 hours of circling these towns, talking to 5 policeman, 6 cab drivers, and finally a clergyman that directed me onto the GW Bridge to get out of town. Moral of this story. I made two trips to New Your City in one day. My first and my last.
  • Oh, my...that is a nightmare even in a car but in rv...yikes. You lived through it...congratulations.
  • Next time try & go around NYC on route 287, you will not have any problems. Route 95 is not good, try & stay west of all the large city's on Routes 81,84,91.

Rt 15 runs parallel to I 95 from NY through CT. It is illegal to travel that RT in a MH that weights over 7500 lbs. The signs are very hard to read and understand quickly. In big letters it says NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES and one would think OK I am not a commercial vehicle. If you read further in small print you can see all the other restrictions. That had to be a nightmare for you, worst that going through Chicago in rush Hr traffic.
  • Oh my, what a nightmare! Glad you finally made it out in one piece! We have found our selves in similar situations and just stayed in the traffic. (Also a nightmare). We only take detours we see big trucks using. Driving through NYC is a nightmare in any vehicle.
