Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole

We will be attending a convention in Salt lake City in June and are thinking of renting a car and driving to Jackson Hole for a few days. According to Mapquest I15 looks like a 4 hour trip.

I would like feedback both pros and cons on taking this route, and what we can expect road condition wise.

Any thoughts ??
  • Agree with the others about turning off at Brigham City if you're not in a hurry. Much more scenic drive.
  • Searching Ut beat me to it, but my suggestion would be to get off I15 at Brigham City and take 89 over the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway to Bear Lake. Bear lake is an amazing shade of blue on a sunny day. Continue on 89 through Star Valley to Alpine Junction then 189/191 through the Snake River Canyon up to Jackson. About 30 miles shorter than the route through Idaho Falls and not much more time on a slower route if you don't stop too often for the scenery.
  • Taking I-15 is an easy route, one of the easiest for winter, or towing. Not necessarily the most scenic until you get closer to Jackson. Several options of where to turn off, with hwy 89 through logan canyon and swinging by Bear Lake being somewhat interesting. I-80 to Evanston is about the same distance and time wise as I-15. Are you looking mostly for best time, easiest drive, or maybe most scenic?
  • Just slightly picky but Jackson is the town and Jackson Hole is the area. We spent about 4 hours in Jackson one day long enough to walk around and get lunch. Other than that I don't know what one would do UNLESS you like to hike.
  • June should pose no problems with a car. You'll be on the interstate except for a small portion of your trip.

When you take I-15 to Idaho Falls then east on 26, if it happens to be snow (I doubt it), don't take 31 to Victor and on to Jackson. It's Teton Pass and very steep and wouldn't be good in snow. If it's dry, definitely take it as it's a beautiful drive otherwise.

Instead, take 26 to Alpine, WY then north on 26/89 to Jackson. It's a flat drive.

That time of year will be gorgeous as the mountains will still have snow - toward the end of summer it's mostly gone. Hope you get to go. It will be worth it!

I made the drive in 2010, SLC to Idaho Falls on I-15, then US-26 to Idaho Hwy 31 to Victor. In Victor, Idaho 33 to Wyoming 22 right into Jackson. The speed limit on I-15 was 80 if I recall correctly... smooth sailing at xxx mph once out of the SLC traffic. I was driving a sports car, not towing, your time estimate sounds right.

There was significant snow in the mountains mid-June, and I wouldn't be surprised of the roads iced-up at night (in the mountains)

I did not return to SLC, instead I went South on US-191 to I-80 and headed East.
