Traveling first couple of weeks in July from Accord, NY near Poughkeepsie, NY towards the Mackinaw area. I have been given suggestions for the Great Lakes area and Mackinaw but am looking for a scenic route from NY to the Great Lakes. Thanks.

A lot of this answer depends on what you call "Scenic". Another problem is that we don't know what you are driving and how capable you are. That said, were I you, and I have been close, I would start by taking SR-28 across the Catskills. That would get me to the southern tier and I would take that to the Erie area. From there on, I would need to know more.

Matt, we are driving a 24 ft. class C Thor Siesta pulling a small car which I can use to visit sites where the rv cannot go.

I'd probably do something along these lines:

I-86 W to I-390 N (continuing on NY-390 in Rochester when it ceases to technically be an interstate) to the Lake Ontario State Parkway to NY18 W, cross into Canada around Niagra Falls. In Canada, take the QEW to 407 to 400 to the trans-Canada highway (or whatever other routing you prefer to get to there). Cross back into the US at Salut Ste. Marie and continue south on I-75 or whatever to Mackinaw.

This assumes, of course, that you are prepared to go through Canada.
