Solana Beach CA Hates RVs

If you are in California and driving I-5, don't even think about getting off at exit 37. Solana Beach has onerous new ordnance that is a very good reason to stay on the interstate.

RVs have wheels for a reason.

  • I suspect many left coasters have tried to take up residence (squatting) on the streets of Solana Beach.
  • It's a problem for many cities near the coast in Southern California. Due to the mild weather many urban campers have taken to sleeping overnight in RV's, vans or other vehicles favored by these folks. When one city passes an ordinance the urban campers move over to the next city as more cities pass the parking ordinance, nearby cities find they have an influx of non-residents.

The economy is forcing many folks to look for alternative housing methods. Coastal community rents are high and wages are low.

Unfortunately, the prices in campgrounds/RV parks have gotten high as well in these coastal areas. So Rv'ers on limited budgets are finding it more difficult to find overnight spots near the coast.
  • Solana Beach, just north of San Diego has had 'issues' with RVs for several years. Their new ordinance, passed this year, limits RVs to 8 hrs of street parking and no off street overnight parking such as WalMart. Remember, it's a beach community and traffic is always a headache in beach communities.

Sounds like the OP got rousted parking overnight in one of their parking lots. I have no problems moving on if the signs prohibit what I want to do. We travel through many small communities and each have their own little quirks, but we learn to live with them. Of course, we stay at campgrounds when we're traveling....Dennis
  • Are we just supposed to guess what that ordinance is or will you be telling us?
