South Dakota help please (hwy 87)

Heading up to Mt Rushmore in a few weeks. After an overnight in Bayard, NE we will go on up to Custer State Park staying at Legions Lake. Google Maps says to stay on 385 to Fairburn and catch 16A over to the campground. But it looks more scenic to cut over through Hot Springs and take hwy 87 up to 16A. Question is...is hwy 87 pretty good road?

I'm pulling a 40ft 5th wheel with a dually.

What route would you take?

Thanks,
Mark
  • From what I remember 87 isn't bad. Just one loop and the rest is just a scenic drive.
  • It's been too long since I drove that route, so I don't trust my memory to answer your question. Here's an old thread on the same topic though.
For the fun of it you might want to search YouTube for "Needles Highway bus." The Needles Highway is a very scenic drive farther north on Route 87. Definitely not RV friendly.
  • You'll be fine taking 87, done it many times. Very scenic & you'll also go thru Wind Cave NP.
  • both ways are very good. it's a bit faster on 79.
On 79, when you get to 36 (Hermosa) to turn west toward the park, look a mile north and you'll see a Flying J if you want to top off your fuel before going into tourist prices country. :)

16 A runs through Custer State Park, so either way will get you there. Coming from the east on 36, you'll find the Park entrance and 16A...do not go right...that's the wrong way and not rv friendly at all. Stay left.

385 takes you to the town of Custer which sits right on the edge of the State park. 87 is in the park and is a bit curvy..it is scenic for sure, but no grades to speak of. I would save it for when you are camped and have your toad to drive.

You will probably like Legion Lake. It's small, but the sites hold some big ones.
