South Of Manzanillo Record Cool Termperatures

This is not to start some kind of debate -- go elsewhere to argue por favor ๐Ÿ™‚

The weather along the Michoacan and Guerrero coast is cooler than at anytime in memory. Beto's grandmother was born during the 1917 Spanish flu epidemic and she claims not even her great mother ever reported temperatures this cool this far south.

Usually the city of Manzanillo can be used as a "cut-off point" southbound for cool nights even in winter. The normal temperature at night in Las Penas in in the high seventies in early January.

For weeks the temperature has been dropping to the mid-sixties. Sea SURFACE temperature has been measured by my son-in-law to be SEVENTY POINT NINE degrees with very low swell height. Unheard of.

So, what does this mean?

I would tend to believe temperatures in urban areas within enclosed bays would be measurably warmer.

But for folks unused to very warm and very humid coastal climate the low temperatures are a boon.

I would lean heavily toward discouraging solo boondocking. It just isn't at all safe. But Michoacan has some of the most affordable RV beach camping in Mexico. The climate had discouraged gringoization of the ambiance and price tag of organized camping.

How long is this going to last? My crystal ball came defective from the factory ๐Ÿ™‚ And micro climates rule down here. I've seen within a space of 48 hours s dawn temperature difference of 15 degrees F between Las Penas, and Zihuatanejo -- a mere 70 miles distant.

Enjoy it while you can!

Except when the Sta Ana winds howl in Lozenges, I am not aware of a beach area with low humidity. Low humidity invites terrain like near Mazatlan, high brush and thorny forest. Not my cup of atole.

Blue skies during the winter are almost 100% of the days. A lot clearer than say Can't-Coon.

Blue sky, sunshine and low humidity?

Fascinating. Enclosed bayside micro-climates are mostly dismissed. Frankly, with recent temperatures up north of you I would rather come there to swim and play beach lizard.

But few tourists like typical weather in our area. And places like Puerto Vallarta, Boca de Iguanas, Melaque and Barra de Navidad can get damned chilly on winter evenings. See your breath around the campfire some winters.

I prefer shirt sleeve weather after sundown.

Truly affordable RV camping places are shrinking on the west coast. There are none left in the state of Quintana Roo. Ten dollars a night is not uncommon for utterly no service boondocking. I pay 66% of that for an unfurnished HOUSE including cost of all utilities.

The more expensive the RV park and surrounding restaurants and services, the less authentic things become. Mexican food is not bland whateverthehell smothered in a pound of melted cheese.

So if "more authentic Mexico" experience is high on your bucket list, now may be the time to include Michoacan and Zihuatanejo camping.

But there are always caveats. The driving or towing of a vehicle that would make a USA teenager drool with envy, is not wise. Anything MACHO is a risk. A 4WD pickup dripping with chrome and assorting bling, is not the best vehicle. Neither would be towing a prestigious sedan. To a degree this caveat is true all over Mexico.

And no, a pusher diesel or a 2018 Prowler trailer is not bait.

Come and enjoy. There's no telling when this extended cooling-off might end...

Here in Zihuatanejo, it's been warmer than usual. We are still hitting 90 daily. So far our lowest night time temp has been 70.8. Usually by now we have had a few chilly mornings in the 60's.

Haven't had a chance to take the water temp in three weeks, but just refound the thermometer yesterday. Last measurement was on December 15, and was 83.1, a drop of two full degrees from December 1. We measure surface temp at the same spot in the bay in about 6 feet of water.

It's interesting.
