I have spent many, many weeks in Alaska over the years, and while beautiful nature-wise, the state is pretty much a junk yard.
Then, if you think it is so junky, why not just stay home?
My point is that you are passing judgement on RV parks that you admit to never having stayed in. Even admitting that you haven't even been there in an RV. Making global statements about something that you have no first hand knowledge is wrong. Just because you may have driven past a couple of RV parks and they didn't meet you standards is no reason to pass judgement on all of them. People don't go to Alaska to stay in resort class RV parks.

I have never RVd in Alaska, but have spent a lot of time there over the years. I think I can safely say that there are NO RV parks in Alaska that compare to even the poorest in the lower 48.
Having said that, RVing in Alaska would be a great adventure, but don't expect too much in the way of decent camping areas. Be prepared to "rough it".
A truly beautiful area of the world.
Really?!!!!
A global statement like this, especially from one who admits to never having RVd in Alaska, shows how little one knows. If you don't know anything about it then don't say anything. There are some real trashy places in the lower 48.
Now, we HAVE taken our RV to Alaska and quite a few of the RV parks don't offer much more than a place to park and spent the night with utility hook-ups. There are a few gems along with the clunkers. We stayed at the Golden Nugget in Anchorage and it was adequate. Very convenient being right across the street from Costco for restocking.

I didn't realize that we were talking "shopping" in Alaska. I have spent many, many weeks in Alaska over the years, and while beautiful nature-wise, the state is pretty much a junk yard. - joe_b_Explorer IISince the Anchorage RV Park closed a few years back, as the owners turned it into a very nice shopping mall. No one since then have stepped up to put in a real nice CG. Since the closing we have been staying in Palmer. However they recently closed the Homestead CG where we have stayed on our last two trips. Local power company bought the property and plan to build a substation on the land.
Staying north or south of Anchorage works for us and we take day trips into town if we need to be there. Anchorage is just another big town, very little Alaskan about it anymore.
Most of the campgrounds in town will works for a night or two, but Anchorage is not a destination for most RVers. If I needed to be in town for a couple of days, the Golden Nugget or Ship Creek CGs would work for me. - lizzieExplorerOur friends in Anchorage have asked around and the Golden Nugget appears to be the best choice for us. Eagle River is said to be nicer but further away. Thanks for all the help. lizzie

- 2gypsies1Explorer IIIWe also stayed at the public park in Eagle River - very nice sites and easy drive to Anchorage.
