The Loneliest Road next week?

We are leaving Reno next Thursday and heading across Nevada on U.S. 50. Is this risky considering possible snow at the higher elevations? I'd love to see this stretch of road but may be starting out too late in the year.

Route 50 is a favorite of ours...just went through there in Mid October...check weather in all "towns" just before you go...those higher elevations (and there are lots of passes) could be dicey. Love that ride in there right weather.

I did us 50 in a semi in feb. Austin was icy but the valleys are glorious. Snow happens. Time your trip, keep an eye on weather. Invest in a CB radio and talk to truckers. We love to talk about the weather.

We're in Moab, UT now and rushed a bit to get here to avoid the 60 mph wind gusts expected on I-70 today.

If you are going to stop at Great Basin NP, I recommend the ranger led cave tours. East of Ely are the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, also worth the side trip. Dick

I've spent a lot of time in NV over the years, and winter can be deceptive. One time it took us nearly three hours from Eureka to Ely (something like 75 miles). Sometimes we were at 15 or 20 MPH over the passes and hoped everyone else was being as cautious. Tough to even see the side of the road (or where the road even was!). We were in a 4x4 and I'm from CO and used to driving in the snow to go skiing. Still one of the worst winter drives I've ever done.

That being said, the forecast looks good for tomorrow and the temps high enough that if it does precipitate, it will be in the form of rain.

As long as you watch current weather you should be good until about Thanksgiving.

Traveled this last year, loved it! Would do it again. Bypass Salt Lake City by going around BYU and going through Park City up to I -80. Good way home to the Midwest. Didn't want to go through Colorado, want to have ample time to explore it. We camped in a nice park , the first town we hit after the Great Basin. We made sure we filled up at each town as we were unaware of what was ahead. Nice trip!

I live in Fallon 3 blocks off highway 50. I always leave Fallon with a full fuel tank and top off in Ely, next fuel in Utah. Todays reg. gas $2.47(Chevron $2.57), prices less for diesel. Fox Peak on the east end of Fallon is very easy in and out. I see rain forecasted for Thursday in Ely. I enjoy driving hwy 50. Dick
