through nyc ?

We travel from Massachusetts to the south a lot. We also go to Virginia Beach often. We have stayed in Newburg NY KOA a few times which is closed in winter and at a county park called Croton on Hudson in Croton NY in the winter many times. Then we cross the Tappen Zee to head towards Garden State Parkway. It is our understanding that we can not go over the bottom part of GW with propane. We have gone across the top of GW three times with the camper coming north to our home. One during nightmarish horrible rush hour traffic and the other two times on a Sunday and just last week on Saturday. Sunday was not bad. Last Saturday we lucked out and although there was some stop and go traffic it wasn't too bad and we made pretty good time.We have also driven to and into NYC may times with no RV. I was also under the impression that RV's are not allowed in the city but I could be wrong.In my imagination it would be even worse than the DC Beltway during rush hour!!!!
We stopped in Virginia Beach last week on our way home. We normally stay at First Landing State Park but it is closed for the winter. We had a good stay for one night at the KOA. Our favorite thing to do in VB is to ride our bikes on the boardwalk. Enjoy your trip.

I've done 2 routes that way.

I-84 to I-81 to Winchester VA picking up US50 and US17 to get back to I-95 just north of Fredricksburg VA, then I-95,I-295 and I-64. You can cut the corner and miss Scranton PA by taking US209 down the Delaware Water Gap to I-80 to Harrisburg and pick up I-81 there.

The other route is I-84 to I-684 to the Tappan Zee (or stay on I-84 to I-87) to I-287 to the Garden State Parkway (yes, you are allowed on the northern end of the GSP) to I-95, then I-295 over the Delaware Mem. Bridge and down US13 over the CBBT.

I have done that several times visiting east coast friends and relatives. I take 84-81-64 then on to Virginia Beach. Eliminates the NY, NJ,MD, Washington mess.

Tappan Zee. Hands down. Done it all.

If you go through NYC go through between 12 am - 6 am follow I 95 south also called the Cross Bronx Expressway. Cross the GW bridge, head south at the split to the NJ turnpike/I 95 south all the way to the Delaware Memorial bridge in Delaware...I 95 south all the way to I 295 east just north of Richmond to I64 east to I 264 to VA Beach. If you pick the right time it is easy. Some times the GW is backed up and some times it's 65 mph none stop. Speaking from experience of many, many trips that way. Good luck what ever way you pick.

If you do decide on NYC/GW Bridge route when you get within 10 miles of the GW get in the far left 2 lanes and stay there because when you get close to the bridge only the 2 left lanes will take you to the "upper level". The best thing to do is get in the far left because you have one more right lane merge from traffic on the right just before getting onto the bridge.

Several things to consider with only one real issue, are you well seasoned at pulling a trailer in difficult situations, because the area that you'll be trying to navigate with a combination vehicle can be the most difficult in the nation. Going where the unsure can have issues. As suggested you can use the round about much safer, much longer I 81 or the Tappanzee 287 in Jersey and toll roads south I 95 shorter but congested route which can be a white knuckler for the timid. Or consider using the jersey route/287 and work your way down to Virginia Beach using 13 through Delaware.

We have done that trip a couple times in the last few years. Even pulled our 5th wheel over the GWB once. Won't do it again. We live just below you (Exit 20).

Take the Mass Pike to 84 and then set your gps to the Tappen Zee.

Also, that's a long drive for a single day drive pulling a trailer. You run into potential traffic at a couple places which can really slow you down.

Remember to find a route around DC and Baltamore.
