Top of the World Report

We traveled from Dawson City to Tok today pulling a 28 ft tt. From Dawson to the border is mostly fairly smooth packed dirt with a few short sections of pavements. The dirt sections were fairly dusty but otherwise in good shape. Able to average about 40 mph most of the way. After the border is a section of about 10 miles of beautiful new pavement. After that is gravel till about 2 miles west of Chicken. Again it's fairly dusty and a bit rougher than the dirt on the Canadian side but no real problems. From 2 miles west of Chicken to the junction with the Alaska highway is paved with a fair bit of frost heaves and a couple of short sections of gravel. Overall not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. The whole trip took about 7 hours including a lunch stop in Chicken and a few other short stretch stops.
  • About 35 miles south of Glennallen is the Squirrel Creek campground. We have stayed there a couple of times and it is a very pretty area. No services, but at $5 a night, it was just fine. We have also stayed at the Bayside in Valdez as well as the Valdez Glacier campground. We much preferred the location of the Bayside. If you want a more remote experience, go for the glacier campground.
  • Eagles Rest and Bayside were good for Valdez. We stayed at Sourdough in Tok and it was fine.
  • Did the TOW as well today...got in before the big rain
Staying in chicken, but I am not sure why. Good experience
Heading to Valdez thru Tok tomorrow. Will probably stay somewhere near Glennallen to break it up.
Any suggestions for Valdez or in between?

We're in Fairbanks now. Warm here - high 70's and supposed to stay this way for the next several days at least. Encountered some smoke from Tok to Dot Lake but ok here. Tok Village rv was a nice place to stay.

    Good luck.
