Travel between Branson, Missouri & CO

Hi all:
I am look forward to a trip out west and keep getting stuck in my planning. We will be heading west out of Branson to explore all of CO. Is there anything worth a stop or two in southern Kansas or the Oklahoma panhandle in early June? We will need an overnight stay in any event, so any recommended cg's will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Dianne
  • Alabaster Caverns SP has an evening bat presentation, if you would like to see the bats fly out.

Little Sahara SP has some nice sand dunes. But of course there are dunes in CO too.

Glass Mountain, halfway between Enid and Woodward, is a place to stretch the legs and climb to the plateau (not really much of a mountain). Not worth going out of the way, but if you are driving 412 it is a good excuse to stop.

Out of Tulsa I usually take US-412 west to Clayton NM. Sometimes I stay at the Clayton KOA. But if it's not too hot I'll boondock in the Rita Blanca National Grassland, at a little roadside rest stop a half mile south of Felt (a tiny place SW of Boise City.
  • The most popular things to see in June in Kansas are tornado shelters! Be careful and heed the weather warnings.
  • When we were through that area last year there was a lot of open space as I recall. There was stuff to see in Dodge City though. I enjoyed the drive though, as it was a slower on the US highways than the interstate.
