Travel route

Spectacular scenery.....but this is what you will encounter and there are often lots of bicyclists using this route.

We did it pulling a pop up with and Explorer. My wife "white knuckled" it the whole way...often inches from 1000 foot drops to the Pacific below.
As I posted earlier, it's most certainly an adventure.

Scenic but not fun with an RV. Several tight turns along the way.
I-5 is the fastest but also the least scenic.

Instead take Hwy 101. Very scenic is several sections. Many wineries along the way in Buellton, Solvang (Great small town) and Paso Robles.

I have never liked the windy coast roads in the fog. You have to watch the road all the time. I would suggest US 395 through Owens Valley. One of the great scenic highways in America. Take Route 44 north of Susanville and you can be in the woods all the way to I-5 up near Mt Shasta.

You can also check RV size restrictions on CA website. They publish maps that show which routes are restricted and which ones are not. Just select the geographical area you'll be traveling and it will show the roads you are prohibited from traveling based on your RV's length.

Just be aware that although the info states "45 foot motor home" the route restriction can apply to lesser lengths so check the maps regardless of your size.

40' is max length on Hwy 1 but plan on irritating a bunch of people. You'll have to cross into oncoming traffic on several of the curves so plan on that too. I did it once with our 40' with toad but wouldn't do it again out of consideration for the other drivers on the road. I did it because I wasn't wise enough to ask on RV.Net. :).....Dennis

We just drove hwy1 from LA to San Fran last week but it was in a small BMW. It was a beautiful scenic drive that I really enjoyed. The twists and curves were a riot. It was a rental so I drove it like I stole it. We don’t have roads like that around here. The wife and kids weren’t as enthusiastic.

There are some sharp curves and steep climbs/descents. I imagine a 40’er with a toad would be a handful. Traffic was light and there were a few big rigs along the way so it is doable. There are several pull out lanes along the way if you are holding up traffic. I would do it with an RV but it won’t be as relaxing or as enjoyable as in a car.
