Travel to Myrtle Beach Questions

Hello everyone,
We will be travelling from the Louisville, KY area to Myrtle Beach in a couple of weeks. Planning to go I-64 to Lexington, I-75 to Knoxville, I-40 to Asheville, I-26 to Columbia, I-20 to Florence and then 76 / 501 in. Does this seem to be the best route for us (towing a 5th wheel).

Any major construction projects that I need to watch out for?

Any decent overnight spots (Walmart, Sams, Cracker Barrel, etc) from about Asheville towards MB?

Lastly, when approaching Florence on I-20, what is best way....through city on 76 or bypassing around via I-95 north to 327 South to 76East? I have seen it both ways on different mapping programs.

Thanks in advance!
Brian
  • On a Thursday I would take 501, it's 4 lane and 378 is not. But on a Saturday when half the town changes, no.
  • I have waited for hours getting into myrtle beach....the roads are a lot nicer now but still get very congested during peak times...with that being said we r leaving Saturday morning heading to Lakewood....chances are we will be in traffic.
  • The good news for us is that we are going in on a Thursday morning and leaving on a Sunday. I hope that will allow us to miss a lot of the Saturday - Saturday condo folks.

I had planned on going around Florence on 327, then coming down 76 to 501 to 544 (to pretty much end up right at the campground). However, I wonder how much of a difference it would make (on a Thursday / Sunday) using 378 as Jaycocamprs mentions previously.

Lastly, still looking for an overnight parking lot in the Asheville - Hendersonville corridor. Anyone have a good suggestion? Temps are forecast in the low 60's now at night, certainly cool enough for a few hours of sleep without needing to plug in.
  • The roads are pretty good going into myrtle beach except for peak times for people going to there....are u planning on picking up 544 from 501?
  • When we went, we went around Florance on 327. But if we go back I will turn south at Camdon or Bishopville, and take US-378 into Conway. We left that way and there was almost no traffic after Conway. The traffic on US-501 starts getting slow back around Marion.
  • Thank you for the above replies. It looks like Asheville will be our goal for the night. With forecasted low's in the low-mid 60's, I am hoping to be able pull off around 11-midnight and sleep for 5-6 hours.

I now have the Allstays app on my phone and it lists options in the Asheville area as a Travel America Station, Cracker Barrel (west of town, the one by the airport says no campers), an REI store, a rest stop, a camping world, a Mountain Energy Travel Stop.

Any thoughts / recommendations / cautions on the above spots?

    Thanks again,
    Brian
  • Florence is a small town but they have some ugly traffic especially where I-20 dumps into town. You are much better off going 1-20 to 1-95 north to 327 etc.
  • Thank you both for your prompt reply. We are going to PirateLand.

I had thought about the weather (Asheville showing 10 day forecast lows in the 60's and Greenville at night in the high 60's) but figured I would have to play it by ear. We would probably be arriving after dark, so ideally a Walmart-type parking lot would be best if cool enough. If too warm and we need a place to plug-in, I would prefer somewhere with a pull-through site (so I wouldn't have to unhook). I do know there is a KOA just west of Ashville that would probably work. Anyplace further east that's easy in, pull through, plug in for the air and out early the next morning?
  • MY guess is you'll need air-conditioning this time of year. If you are a member of Passport America, depending on your travel dates, you may find a 1/2 price park in the Asheville or Spartanburg area. Croft SP in Spartanburg, SC isn't too far off the big road and has W&E for $14-$18/nite.
  • We do need to know what Cg you are going to. North MB CG are a long way from the South MB CGs.

It is easier to run 95 to 327, to 301, to 501 to Conway. There yopu will have to make a decision, IF you are going to North MB (MBTP, Apache) you will need to jump on 22 to Kings road.
If going to SMB. LW, PL, Or, OL. You need tp run on down 501 to 544. Do not run 501 all the way to MB. 544 brings you out right at the CGs, in fact Ocean Lakes is straight across the road when you hit the light at 17.
