Tulare CA to Patterson CA - which cross route?

Question

The last time we travelled 99 (2 years ago) it was horrendous.  This time, from 58 to Tulare, it was quite decent.  We're on our way from Tulare (where 99 seems to get rough again) to Patterson (I-5) and have a choice of 99N to 198E then I-5N or 99 to 180 to 33 to 5 or 140 to 5 or, from Turlock, W Main St. to 5.  Which route would you take pulling a fiver?

My vote would be option 1, 99 north to 198 WEST(not east) to 5 north. 5 is a nicer drive, better condition, usually with better traffic flow.

My mind was thinking west; my fingers said east.  What can I say.  It's matter (fingers) over mind, lol.  Thanks for the suggestion.
