US 20 in Idaho

How is the hwy from I15 heading North to West Yellowstone, Mt. on US 20? Pulling a 5er. Steep? Long pull?
  • Pretty flat most of the way. Slight hill near Henry's lake. Nothing to be concerned about.
  • There is one significant grade just North of Ashton, Idaho.

Ashton hill which is about 7 miles of 6% grade. Double lane so you will not be holding up traffic.

Road surface is very good but check weather if travelling anytime before June as it can snow up until June.
  • Here's a picture of Ashton Hill as seen from the rest stop at the bottom of the hill, looking North. We tow and have no problems. You should be ok too.

  • If you are at Ashton, consider taking the side road to Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. It will rejoin US 20 in about 20 or 30 miles and the Falls are something to behold.
  • No problem. We take our dually crew and 39' fiver thru there yearly. The pull north of Ashton isn't bad and most of the pull has a slow lane. But I will say this, from Ashton to West Yellowstone is a very recreational area. There is another very slight pull from the east end of Island Park to the Idaho-Montana state line at Targhee Pass. Please obey the descending speed limit signs and also keep an eye out for wildlife crossing the roadway. After dark all bets are off! Beautiful area and enjoy.

This is a beautiful route, but narrow and winding. We've done it in our FW, but DH will just about drive anywhere and we stayed at the CG at Lower Mesa Falls. Talk about peaceful, the constant sound of the waterfalls was lovely. There is a big parking lot there to easily get in and out, to park and walk over and enjoy them. I can't remember about the parking lot at Upper Mesa Falls though.

The Upper Mesa Falls parking lot is not really conducive to parking in with a rig. There might be a few spots there big enough, if you're lucky, but I wouldn't recommend it. Better to do this with just the TV/toad. Definitely worth the stop, however!
