US49 Gulfport to Jackson MS Conditions

I am heading west out of Gulfport MS to Arizona and don't like I-10. Can anyone give a condition of US-49 north to Jackson so I can take I-20 until it gets to join I-10. Have a motorhome and the last time on I-10 felt like I was getting beat up.

If there is a better route I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks
  • Dalenoel, if you did not like I-10 you should not expect much better on I-20.
  • If you take 49, just don't make the mistake I did a couple years ago and take it straight through Hattiesburg!:p The road is extremely rough through town. Take the 59 bypass on the West side.
  • Thanks both for the info. We are going the day after Easter so they won't be started much yet. Only the 8 miles north of Florence is not much and we would be through there by 10 in the morning. Good to hear most of the road is in good shape as I really don't like I-10 and we have 6 days to get to Tombstone, AZ
  • I just returned from a trip to FL from AR last week. We took I-55 south out of Memphis and switched to 49 at Jackson. We went through 20+ miles of construction and very rough roads. Speed was much reduced and took over a hr for just the 20 miles.

Now we were going south and I can't recall how the north bound lane looked.

It was so bad we rerouted away from 49 to get to I-10 and took a completely different route home to avoid 49.

Here is a link to what I'm referring to seems to have started only a few months ago. US-49 Construction
  • Good road. Mostly divided highway, but a few traffic lights now and then. Hattiesburg is a good place to take a break. Lots of food/fuel options.
