Utah Highway 20

Headed to Bryce Canyon next week and plan to take Highway 20 over to the 89. I understand the elevation gets to 7800 feet.

What sort of grades can I expect?
  • Thanks Paul-
No real worries other than I like to have a good idea of the road before heading some place new if I am leaving a major interstate.... If there are long steep grades I may try to avoid them in the afternoon sort of thing etc.
This all looks to be no problem. Love the website!

Are you worried about the absolute altitude, the maximum grade, the total climb, or what?

From Google Maps Terrain mode, the climb to the highest pass is about 500' on each side. On one side it climbs 400' in 1.6 miles, on the other in 1.3 miles.

Streetview shows 2 lanes climbing, 1 lane down on both sides.

Big rig video of this climb

At 4:00 he reaches the summit, and sees and 8% grade sign. Downhill pace is about the same as hill. Lots of trucks going the other way.
  • Okay- 8% is pretty steep.
Are there two lanes going up and down for the steepest portions?
  • I had no problems and was pulling a 35 foot Alpenlite. Up on top we saw a Martin in the snow along the road. It was very beautiful trip.
  • I just went over 20 in the opposite direction. From 89 to I-15. Going up on my trip there was an 8% grade for a few miles. Me, and a lot of trucks were down to 40 mph going up.
Going your way may be better.

We've done 20 to 89 to Bryce (and also up to Capital Reef) and it is a nice road with no grades to speak of. Piece of cake... enjoy the trip.

Not true. There are grades, both up and down. However, they are less steep than those on hwys 14 and 9.

  • I think Highway 20 which runs from Interstate 15 over to Highway 89 reaches 7800 feet- I could be wrong. I am familiar with 89 and we are good on 89.

Just want to know what I am getting myself into on Highway 20 as I will be towing heavy.
  • Bryce itself is 7800' and higher. But US89 runs in a valley at about 6800', and I15 at 6000'.
