I was on another thread about the border crossing at Lukeville when I originally mentioned this problem. I thought I would post it under a new topic to get a broader audience. This is our first time travelling with our RV to Mexico. We have Mexico insurance on our RV and Truck. We are In San Carlos Mexico and planning on staying in the Free Zone. My understanding is that we don't need TIP as long as we stay in this zone. What I didn't realize we needed was a travel Visa (FMM). We were not stopped or asked at the border for this documentation or we would have got it then. Now, I'm hearing that our Insurance would be void if we were to get into an accident. Is that true? Also, is there any way to get our FMM from here so we can correct this. Thanks.

Depending on the insurance carrier and what area of coverage you may or may not have insurance that is valid, it all hinges on the visa whether you are legal or illegal in Mexico.There are insurance policies that you can purchase that only cover a given amount of miles into Mexico and for a given amount of time, I purchase insurance for the F-150 when going down to Tijuana, Rosarito or Ensenada, this insurance will be for 24, 48 or 72 hours purchased at the US side of the border and is void and null beyond Ensenada in Baja Norte, for going beyond Ensenada I need to get a visa (FMM) and a different insurance policy and a Temporary Import Permit (TIP), after 9/11 the world changed.Allstate's insurance policy covers if I am correct 50 miles more or less in to Mexico and maximum of 72 hours in one month per month, to travel further South you need a Mexican insurance carrier attached to the US carrier.Before 9/11 the rules at the border were different, I did not need documents just the insurance, I was asked if I was a US citizen and answered yes, they already had they data in the computer at the US side, after 9/11 they need to know who is entering the US and when, so many try to falsify documents and that is the danger.For the border area your insurance may or may not require a visa, I know Allstate does not for the few miles in to Mexico, and the ones that I purchase at the border are attached to the US carrier as a supplement, I purchase the whole package not just the liability, for the RV and the toad we have full coverage for both and for the entire year.navegator

I think you're good to go.The applicant is aware that the card passport (Tarjeta Pasaporte) can only be used in the border crossings by land and for visiting the border zone; it might not be used to travel to the territory of the Mexican Republic or used for international air trips.

The issue is that if you are in Mexico for more than 72 hours, you need a visa, FMM issued by Mexico. If you don't have one, and are in Mexico more than 72 hours, your insurance is void. Whenever we have had to do anything with insurance in Mexico, the carrier wants copies of the FMM and if necessary, the TIP. Same with the US carriers that cover property damage in Mexico.

No, you are fine. Officially, they don't want them back because they expire. You may read other things about it, but that's what we have heard consistently about them.
Sure hope you come back, and use this forum for information about the GREAT things about Mexico without the hassles!

Update: we got an FMM by buying it on-line. When we crossed the border back from Mexico at Sonoyta, we were not asked for it at all, so I hope this doesn't mean they think we're still in the country?

Try the Guaymas Airport first, you are only 15-20 miles away.

I think Chris and Alex have posted your only two options: take the chance (99%) that no one will ask you for it or drive back to the border and get it.

Then, consider it part of the experience and be sure to return to Mexico!

Where are you now? Maybe you should just go back to the border and get the permit. Then there is no question.

1. I'm not aware of events corroborating Yes or No answer.
2. No. 99% chance that nobody will ask you, either.
