I don't know if this was reported before, but I am sick and tired of politicians who are always looking to tax us more. How about looking at ways to reduce costs? We use I-81 for many of our trips into Virginia and beyond. This is outrageous. https://wcyb.com/news/local/gas-prices-going-up-along-i-81-in-va-starting-july-1

How about all the electric vehicles that don't pay any fuel tax, yet use the roads just like the rest of us? True, for now the EV's are just automobiles, but consider that they will get bigger and you'll start seeing electric powered big trucks and MH's? Out here in WA, too much of the gas tax (which is about the highest of any state) goes to mass transit and doesn't get spent on roads.

Don't worry, just not enough EV's on the roads yet. Once the fuel tax revenues start to fall off by having enough EV's on the road, you can expect to be reporting your mileage on your state tax forms, and digging into your pocket. The issue will be they'll also keep the fuel taxes in place. So if you drive an ICE vehicle you'll pay both at the pump and at the end of the year, and if you drive an EV you'll pay both at the end of the year and again monthly to the tax column on the electric bill. Wait until you see what happens to electric rates and taxes on them over the next 10 years, bend over and grab em folks because they're coming in dry.

Some people are geniuses regarding this. A friend who is a huge EV proponent, who has never owned one BTW, truly believes when he does buy one he's going to be charging it up free LOL. He's a dumbass and I have had to get up and find another bar stool at times when he starts his spew.

LOL. For decades the trucking companies have reported how many miles they have run in each state, and how many gallons of fuel they paid tax on in that state. If not enough, send a check. Some time back there was some discussion making citizens report on miles driven in each vehicle, so the vehicles that use alternative fuels could be charged the road taxes.

illinois WAS going to levy an annual EV tax of $1000...but cut it back to $248: thst's much closer to what the *average* owner of a gas powered car pays. $248/$.38 (illinois per gallon tax) = 652 gallons.

Thatโ€™s the nice thing about large tanks. We can fill up when and where we want within reason!

The Winchester, VA Flying J just before the MD state line is currently at $2.35 for regular gas and $2.99 for diesel. Adding the estimated $0.07 cent tax increase still keeps the price below the $2.59/$3.19 prices at the Pilot up the road in Hagarstown, MD. Or you could push on to PA where current prices are $2.85/$3.49. My only gripe with the "I-81 gas tax" is there's no guarantees that the funds go towards I-81 or I-81 access roads improvements.

I agree that we should all vote. But wouldn't it be nice if there was actually a CHOICE between Tweedledum and Tweedledumber?

Both parties are Tax + Spend. Only difference is who they try to shift the taxes onto. I do fear for today's young'uns.

Me personally, I'd much rather pay 7 cents more per gallon than have to deal with another toll.

According to Wikipedia, I-81 through VA is only 325 miles long. Unless a vehicle gets really bad gas mileage or has a really small tank, it should make it through VA without having to fill up. That being said, I am pretty sure, even with the additional 7 cents tax, that MD and NC will still have higher gas prices than the gas stations along I-81 in VA.

totally correct. what is the ave. cost per gallon? still less in VA.

At risk of getting too political on a thread that can be nothing but political.
I agree everybody should vote. But is that all? IMHO, at least as important as the vote is educate yourself. What are your representatives (all levels) talking of doing in your name. If they are talking about a action that will effect you, contact them, let them know what action you prefer they take. And most important, keep track, do they vote in your interest? What they do is more important than their ads, at election time know how to vote.
I wish instead of the little "I voted" sticker we could paint a finger so everybody you saw for a couple of weeks would know you did not vote. Then when you started to witch others could say You had a say, but now you let others take your rights.

RGar, my suggestion is to fill up before you hit Virginia and keep going. It's a $.07 tax, we will still be cheaper than many of the adjacent states.

Yeah, fill up in PA where the tax is more than twice as much. I live in PA but buy 100% of my fuel in other states.

Michigan governor(new) was trying to raise the gas tax by .45 gallon to fix roads. Various taxes for many years and previous gas tax hikes were supposed to be for the roads - never see any improvement and there is always construction in the Detroit area.
