Crews will set girders over freeway as part of interchange project

Around-the-clock work over Interstate 5 in Salmon Creek will completely close both directions of the freeway THIS WEEKEND. The closure is scheduled to last from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday — a 54-hour shutdown that will send tens of thousands of cars onto other nearby freeways and local streets.

Southbound I-5 will be closed between Interstate 205 and Northeast 134th Street. Northbound I-5 will be closed between state Highway 500 and I-205. That means all vehicles traveling north on I-5, unless they get off sooner, will be diverted to Highway 500.

“(Highway) 500 will basically be I-5 for the weekend,” said WSDOT spokeswoman Heidi Sause.

  • Good information passed on....thanks for thinking of the RVers, Kathy! It's going to surprise many weekend drivers, unfortunately.
  • Lovely.:R That along with the Skagit bridge. Sure glad we are not planning to go south this weekend.

They've been warning about this (on their web site at least) since before the bridge collapse up north.

Through travelers should be using I205 - but that's been the usual recommendation. That would also apply to I84 travelers who need to head north.
