Hey all,Will be in Oregon City tomorrow, then headed south to San Fran. Can I get some advice on what roads to take? I am nervous on narrow roads, at elevation, with small shoulders, no guard rails, and constant switchbacks. I can handle it ok with wider shoulders and wider lanes. So, with this in mind, what's my best route for me and wife? Appreciate the adviCe. Brent

From what you say you best route would be I-5 to the cut off to I-80. I-5 is interesting & scenic up thru Redding CA. Dick

For me the easiest way that we used to go was I5 to I505 to I80. By taking the I505 you miss the traffic at Sacramento. I505 comes out at Vacaville. JMO

I find most of I5 quite beautiful I was not even bored by the Sacramento valley, so maybe that makes me weird.

101 is much, much slower, but better camping. Do you want to get to SF quickly, or do you want to camp?

California Hwy 101 doesn't have drop-offs and switchbacks. Don't confuse it with Hwy 1 which does. Hwy 101 is a very nice drive to San Francisco.

Really? That's good. Ok, how about 101 in Oregon? Looks like Cali's 1...sorta. Our desire in Cali is redwoods, San Fran, kiddo, and possibly wine country/tour. Will certainly entertain any "must see"s anyone suggests along the way. No really hurries in the travel. Have about a month more left on the trip.

Stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory and try the grilled cheese sandwiches and then stay a couple of nights at Ocean Side and visit Shore Acres State Park just down the road

There is a narrow section of 101 south of Yachats and north of Florence where they are doing road construction and it is one lane alternating traffic on the outside edge. My hubby wasn't happy with this stretch BEFORE construction.
