A friend who lives there would not let us rent a car for travel in Chile... had us picked up at the airport in Lima by limo. We used buses to travel as even the police will shake your down for a bribe to continue if in a car. Maybe as someone who already lives there and speaks the Spanish, maybe things have changed???
Chile or Peru or both???
Chile is regarded by travellers as a very safe, very police-corruption free country.
Lima (Peru) may not be the same.
I have friends who have travelled for years in the south of South America and they say the reports of corruption are somewhat exaggerated. Probably a bit like the situation in Mexico where a few incidents get blown out of proportion.
Give me another four months and I'll be able to give you a first-hand account - but I am expecting it to be very similar to Mexico in this regard - lots of stories, but few actual events that would cause problems for the traveller passing through.
Some body knows or have info about Rving in Chile?
If you are in Chile now, you are in the perfect place to get some information.
But, perhaps a good place to start would be to research the RV hire companies who are operating in Chile. Andean motorhomes in Argentina also have a web site http://www.andeanroads.com and a big facebook site - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andean-Roads-Motorhome-Rentals/105541432827923 - and they also have their RVs go over into Chile and there are plenty of stories from customers.
