WHEW! Thankful for sure

As we were coming thru San Antonio today on Hwy 281, I noticed a school bus following me and with all the traffic lights north of San Antonio on this Hwy, they could not get passed me. When we got to the 3 lane conglomerate in S.A. proper they finally passed me, but what I did not know it was as school bus of band students with an SUV pulling their trailer right behind them. Well, as we were tooling thru town, my wife screams "She is going to hit us", and what do you know, yep-the band trailer hit our passenger side mirror, knocking it (folding it so that I could see myself basically)..the wife went out the window and got it back to where I could at least see something next to me. Of course they did not stop-prolly did not know they actually hit me. I am just thanking God that it was not anything worse. SCARY-you betcha! Things happen in a split second. Just had to vent/let go/praise God.
  • I replaced the useless mirrors on my 'C' with trucker's mirrors so that I could see along either side of the 'C' from the driver's seat. And I stay in the right hand lane, so anyone trying to pass me on the right would have to do it on the gravel berm. I also set the speed control 5 MPH below the max speed limit and let everybody pass me. I wave to them as they pass me, and sometimes, they return the wave, only some don't use all the fingers on their hand.
I also limit my driving to after morning rush hour and before evening rush hour. That also gets me into a FHU RV park early enough to pick my site.
    Being retired helps a lot.

Well got to ask who hit who?
One of the two of you drifted too close or over the lane divider line? Who was it?
What was on your left, that kept you close to the SUV & trailer.

To fold the mirror in like stated you needed o be likely traveling slightly faster than the SUV. What if any perement damage to the mirror?
  • Actually it was on a 4 lane section of highway and with the configuration of lanes, had to stay put for my destination.
  • Glad you were ok and thank God you didn't sustain any serious damage.

I too would have called 911. For one I wouldn't want my kids in a bus where the bus driver felt the need to 'pass' ANY where, ANY time, or in whatever lane, with all those children on board. The driver should have been reported. How many times have we all watched in horror where school buses loaded with band students are killed on the highway?

I just called the school board last week to report the school bus's doing 55 in a 30 mph speed limit each and ever morning with a full load of kids sans seat belts. Those bus drivers now drive the speed limit. In some ways I hope I saved some lives.
  • I agree and I would have called 911 to report a it and run. Seeing as how you know who is responsible send the school a bill for your damage!
  • I call baloney on that response. It's never ok to hit another vehicle regardless of the circumstances
  • Sorry pet peeve... they hit your pax side mirror? If you knew that they wanted to pass (which you apparently did) then you should have pulled into the right lane and let them go by on the left. You are partially to blame here.

From a state where they call the right lane the through lane, because that's the lane everyone goes "through" to get on and off the highway.
