Winthrop WA (Cascades) area hit with mudslides 8/22/2014

Question

From WSDOT this morning:SR 20 Both Directions - SR 20 and SR 153 are closed from Twisp, milepost 204, east on SR 20 to milepost 230, Old US 97 HYW near Okanagan. SR 153 is closed from Twisp, south to Carlton, MP 22, due to mud and rocks across the highway. These closures will be assessed in daylight hours by WSDOT to determine a re-opening time frame. There is currently no power in the area as power lines are still down. Updates will be provided as they become available.Last Updated: 8/21/2014 11:55 PM

This will continue to be a problem until vegetation grows back after the fires.WSDOT link

More on the local facebook news pagehttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Methow-Valley-News/128607483863863The pictures there show a major washout on WA153, though there is talk of a possible detour.Sounds like the rainstorm was heavy enough to cause widespread flooding.  The recent burn probably compounded this issue.

Wow, those guys can't get a break. It's nice to see the new advertisements on TV promoting the area for tourism. They'll need it this year.

We're heading through there next week to stay with friends in Malott. Their home and orchard were saved when the fire was stopped at their property line.
