Wolf Creek Pass Which direction

Planning trip between Durango and Salida. Traveling in a C gasser towing a Wrangler. Have driven the RV in western mountains before but not over Wolf Creek Pass. Know about lower gears and engine braking. Want to know if one direction is better for travel than the other or about the same? Doesn't matter which direction, this segment is part of a loop and can be traveled east or west.
  • Wolf Creek E/B 4" at the summit with unexpected storm. Take your time there's n rush, watch your engine temp on warm days.

  • Been over it many times, one of the easiest passes to go over either direction and plenty of places to pull over if needed.

But if grades and heights freak you out, it's easier to go up.

Don't both directions have both up and down ??
  • The west side is the longest and steepest. So a harder climb if traveling east. Or a steeper descent if traveling west. But the west side has two lanes going up and two going down (most of the way) so you can take your time either way. And a couple of run away truck ramps if it gets away from you going down. :B And going up there are several pullouts where you can pull over if your temp starts to climb.
  • I'd say it is about the same either way. Be sure to stop at Treasure Falls, and at the overlook about 1/2 mile farther up.
